well, you certainly don't need a letter from the US ambassador. maybe the airlines would like confirmation from the embassy that you'll be admitted into the US. as for having to be 18 to travel to the US alone, that's not a US regulation either. it may be an airline requirement.

you do need to be aged 18 or older to travel without your parents permission - that part is true
