Is it good to live in Saudi Arabia

Is it good to live in Saudi Arabia?
My husband is being transfered to Ethiopia & i & our daughter will be going with him. She is 6 & i will Home school. After a year or so he'll be transfered to another country in that area. This will go on until he can retire in 10 years. I told him if he gets assigned to Saudi Arabia he has to quit or i'm moving to my parents house. I refuse to have a white, female, American child in such an evil environment. I'm sure there are lovely people there but women are treated like dirt. They can't drive cars, go with head dress & i would never in a billion years have my baby in a public school there. So if it were to happen(with my luck it will) what is it like?

Don't ever go there. My uncle is an ex-patriate living in Dubai. They provide a good life but the rest of the middle east DOES NOT. Especially for white Americans. It is a terrible, terrible idea. Your child cannot thrive in such an oppressive environment. Neither can you for that matter. Your husband has to decide between his family and his job... You cannot live there. Please.

sounds like you have it summed up pretty good. There is many cases where and Arabian man marries a white women and then goes home. There is a movie staring Sally Fields "Not without my daughter" that tells what it will be like. The amount of money he may make and the power he will now experience over you will over whelm both of you. A dollar goes a lot further in those countries and men find they have all the control. Once there you cannot leave so don 't think we will go on vacation and then come home. Your daughter will be forced to learn muslim law, and if a truly rich man no matter what his age happens to be takes a liking to your daughter there is little you can do to prevent him from making her one of his wives. Money is power!

If you don't love your husband enough to follow him where he earns the money, sorry - you do not love your husband. Beside the moral aspect of you not following your husband - what's wrong with living in Saudi? If you think that in Saudi women get treated like dirt - your opinion. What that got to do with you? Yes you have to wear Hijab and you can't drive - so what? Where's the problem? Bottom line. You choosed a husband being on foreign employments (I did the same). Set your priorities. Your marriage or the "inconvenice" living in Saudi for just a certain time. I have a friend {Brit) who calls her time in Saudi "the best". After being in Ethopia you may feel like in haven being in Saudi. Give it a chance and think positive.
5 :
well... you think that : women are treated like dirt.. Seriously opinion differs.. but the truth shall remain the same no matter what you or anyone else thinks. I m an expatriate living in saudi arabia from 18 years and believe me what other people think of saudi arabia as treating women as dirt is NOT the case in reality. Yes, i agree that women are not allowed to drive, they have to wear hijab but that does not mean women are treated like DIRT !!! I m myself a woman who longs to drive a car but not getting my desire fulfilled does not make me say against this country though it's not mine.. I love staying here... my home country is free and has all what you think as freedom means.. yet i feel safer here. When it comes to schooling, i know so many americans and british friends of mine who actually feel saudi arabia offers them more than what US/UK offered them ... There are american and british schools here and they are known to give good education to children.. If you think that this environment is evil, then that is because you have just read what the newspaper or magazine speaks and seen what the media shows.. And obviously you will agree with me that media does not show the REAL image of the country.Rather, it justs builds up some biased image and displays as reality. It would be completely wrong if i say that US is such a bad country because each day i see 100s of stories about rapes and murders. So i m not gonna go there.. And i guess someone above me answered saying that once you come to saudi arabia, u can never go back n money is power n crap like that... Sister, i just wanna tell u that saudi rules are strict regarding going back and all that, but again if u want to leave saudi at anytime with ur child, you can leave it at the earliest. There will be no complication with u n ur child being forced to stay here. Whereas if it is ur husband, surely he will have to complete his job time and then leave this country.. Really, i think you should support him if ever he gets to come to saudi arabia. After all, he is not earning all that money solely for himself and certainly need ur support. It shall be a matter of few months probably and he is not forcing you to stay in saudi arabia for a life time.. Good luck from my side, but all i want to tell in the end is: Like we know the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence, similarly The grass is not always rotten and spoiled on the other side of the fence.

Stay home, we got enough American thugs.

well if you come to Saudi with a "hate" attitude, you wont like it.. But there are tens of thousands of western woman living here, some married to saudis, some came with their american husbands and they are happy to be here and frankly prefer raising their little white daughters here much more than raising them in USA where they would be subject to rape, drugs, and teenage sex... its not an "evil" environment.. its a family geared environment.. high moral code here.. generous culture.. some expats have loved it here so much, that they've raised their family here, and their children returned to work and are now raising their children.. I know many in this situation. I agree 150% plus what "H" has to say up there.. So what that you wear a scarf... dont american women wear scarves also? if they didnt, then why do I find scarves in Macy's, Dillards? Walmart, Saks 5th avenue? why? ... So you couldnt drive.. There are so many ways to get around here that ive never found it a problem... The woman here dont feel like they are treated like dirt.. We are not exploited for our bodies like the women of the west are.. We are respected for our knowledge and our mind.. Not if we have a perfect size 2 body, perky breasts, full lips, and fake died extention laden hair, And you dont have to put your child in public school.. there are hundreds of thousands of private schools, and even international schools where all the british, american and western children go...

If you really care about your daughter, no matter what country you decide to invade, make sure she is not home schooled by a bigot.

Conservatives, would you rather live in Saudi Arabia, or Somalia

Conservatives, would you rather live in Saudi Arabia, or Somalia?
In Somalia, there is essentially no government whatsoever. The men, women, and children are all equally trained from birth to take personal responsibility, fend for themselves, and try very, very hard not to die as a casualty of dirty water, lack of food, or the machete. But in Saudi Arabia, the Royal Family's wealth is strictly based on oil profits worldwide, and they actually see no need to tax their citizens. There is a government, and fortunately, it's RELIGIOUS! No taxation found, but then again, 100% of the country is moral and god-fearing, and if laws are taken out of holy books - no liberals over there pushing for same-sex marriage! - then traditional families are preserved. Now, I know this will be a tough decision, like trying to choose between Reese's Cups and chocolate cake, but you must choose only one. So, where would you rather spend your golden years?

Big government Islamic State or a failed communist state? Both sound like conservatives worst nightmares. To cons, North Korea is not a liberal paradise either. Liberals may prefer the social democracy of Sweden or the liberal society of Netherlands. Conservatives may prefer the libertarian conservative country of Switzerland or the social conservative society of Ireland. That would be fair to ask.
2 :
What a load. Somalia is radical Islam, like Afghanistan but wilder. Early America was about as libertarian as a country has ever been and it sure as hell wasn't anything even close to Somalia. Islamists are diametrically opposed to libertarian principles.
3 :
What a stupid question. United States of America, was brought up with conservative values. Back in the in the 1930s, young white kids would work on there parents farms, they would respectful to there hard working parents. Older kids were thought to be leaders for their younger siblings. And look at todays society. Young people, dress like...pop stars, smoke marijuana, try to act like bad boys, girls dress slutty= since a lot of these girls have no self esteem, kids are lazy. Thanks to Liberals. As leaning conservative, I would not live in S.A or Somalia. I was born in USSR, no thanks to socialist.
4 :
My public educators and Michael Moore have made a case for me to move to Cuba. Maybe you go first and let me know how great it is.
5 :
I'm more neutral, but I'd rather live in Saudi Arabia. At least there it's possible to get a hot shower and clean bed sheets.
6 :
C'mon, don't be silly. That's like asking if a liberal would rather live in Cuba or North Korea. This kind of mud slinging isn't gonna get us anywhere. I've been guilty of it too, but let's try to be adults this time. You do know that many liberals have religious faith too, right?
7 :
I'd prefer Somalia. Give me liberty or give me death. I'd rather fight for my life than live under oppression. Besides, I'm pretty good at fighting and am not all that attached to my life. Probably a lot of money to be made on pirate bounties.
8 :
I'll take Somalia. Where would a liberal rather live Sweden or South Africa? Or I guess I should say rape capital of Europe or the rape capital of Africa?
9 :
Santa Barbara, California. First get rid of the Liberals.
10 :
What you have to understand is that Somalia is pretty much an Anarchy. Conservatives don't want this. A government should be one that is strong enough, yet limited in it's power to fulfill it's proper role in protecting the rights and liberties of the people. the attached video touches on the problems brought on by Anarchy. Clearing up misunderstandings like this might help you start your journey toward Conservatism.
11 :
Saudi Arabia is not the best country in the world.... I would rather stay in my home country... where people respect elders... and there is freedom
12 :
I am from Somalia and I love my country but I would rather live in Saudi Arabia because there is nothing good about chaos. If there was peace and stability in Somalia then of course Somalia would be were I would like to live the most. I've been to Saudi Arabia and it's just too patriarchal. Somalia is more matriarchal which suits me just fine :)

Expat compounds are expensive! Think 5,000 S.R.+. Anyway compounds are very crowded and you will not find something fast....
4 :
jeddah :) ..

.....it depends where your husband is going to be assigned for work....Its good to live in big cities like Jeddah in the west, Riyadh in the central and Khobar in the east because all things that you need are available there.....its hard to live in the province or remote areas where everything is limited.....
6 :
I was raised in Makkah. I love this city. However,if you want less restrictions, then you may settle to Jeddah. Also I don't know weather you are muslim or not,as non-muslims are not allowed in Makkah. There are lot of fun places in Jeddah. Best of luck for your future. well which country are you from?
7 :
Hi...well if u r talking about Saudi riyal 2200 per annum so its impossible and if u r talking about per month its possible ...its depends where u r going in saudi arabia..i mean which city and place ....if u r going to Jeddah then its a much better place than other cities..u can try out in these both places aziziya and sulemaniya in jeddah u can find a flat on rent..if u need any help u can mail me aqeel_danish@yahoo.com.... :)
8 :
It's best for you to live in a city. Jeddah, Riyadh, and Khobar all have large expat communities. 2200 riyals a month will not get you a place inside a western compound, but you will be able to find a decent apartment outside a compound for that.
9 :
It depends where will you live? From western to eastern around 1500 KM. Jeddah is the biggest western city. Khobar , Damam and Dahran are the biggest eastern city. Riyadh is the biggest in central. In all those cities you will find expat community. ** Do not take any previous negative image about Saudi Arabia :) It's right that woman life is more restricted, but not only the woman. It's the life style for both women and men; specially in Riyadh. Jeddah is more open and friendly. all the best :)
10 :
go live in shaqara
11 :
most urban, modernized and open minded yet respectful people i've lived with are people from the eastern region. and if ur talking about 2200 a month, then yes u can get a very luxurious place with that amount. mail me if u guys need any help( better hurry, i'm graduating by the end of February lol )
12 :
JEDDAH!! place to be.
13 :
